Keary finds sweet spot for Sydney Roosters

AAP News | 14th Apr 19

Sydney Roosters coach Trent Robinson says Luke Keary has hit a "sweet spot" in his career as he continues to mount a compelling case for a NSW State of Origin call-up.

Keary continued his rich vein of form as he spearheaded the Roosters' 30-16 demolition of Cronulla at PointsBet Stadium on Saturday night.

The Roosters five-eighth set up three tries as his games continues to go from strength to strength.

His skill and daring were on show on the stroke of halftime when he placed a perfectly-executed chip for Latrell Mitchell, with the superstar centre racing 60 metres to score.

"I knew with the time, if it didn't work it wasn't going to be an issue (and cost the side)," Keary said.

"Me and Latrell have been talking about it the last couple of weeks, doing something like that in yardage.

"I love seeing him in the clear. He reminds me of GI."

Asked if he and Mitchell practised the move at training, Keary said: "Every now and then. Me and Latrell do some weird stuff."

After playing second fiddle to more dominant playmakers throughout his career, Keary has begun to come into his own during periods in which Cooper Cronk has missed game time over the last six months.

And while it would be a huge gamble by NSW coach Brad Fittler to drop either of Nathan Cleary or James Maloney after they won last year's series, Keary has been arguably the form playmaker and player of the competition.

"I honestly don't know. You can't control that. I could walk out tomorrow and get injured," Keary said of his Origin ambitions.

"Anything can happen. No one really talks about it, you just do your thing.

"If it eventuates, it eventuates, if it doesn't, it doesn't."

Robinson said the 27-year-old was coming into the prime of his career.

"He's in a sweet spot right now," Robinson said.

"He's got experience, he's still young and he's still got a half there (Cronk) which is allowing him some freedom but he's still got control.

"I think there's a real sweet spot there at the moment.

"I'll walk in there on Monday with Luke and say he can improve on some things that we saw tonight. He'll be happy with some of his bigger plays but I know him, he'll say 'no, no, some of those areas weren't good enough'."
