News & Previews
Rugby League commenced in Australia in 1908 under the newly formed “New South Wales Rugby Football League” with the new format of football immediately appealing to the public.

Eight teams from Sydney and one from Newcastle competed in the first competition with South Sydney becoming the inaugural Premiers, narrowly defeating Eastern Suburbs (14 – 12).

The competition continued to expand with Sydney’s growth and in 1988, two Queensland teams - the Brisbane Broncos and Gold Coast Giants joined the competition, followed several years later by the Perth Reds, Auckland Warriors and North Queensland Cowboys.

In 1998, the National Rugby League (NRL) was formed after two years of a splintered competition during the Super League war.

Aside from the Premiership Final, played on the first weekend of October, the biggest game of Rugby League played during the year is when Queensland and New South Wales compete in the State Of Origin series. Three matches that decide which state claims Rugby League supremacy.

Reigning NRL Premiers are the Sydney Roosters who last year, after dominating the Melbourne Storm from the opening whistle (21 – 6) and claiming the club’s thirteenth Premiership title.
