Clapper couldn't beat Winx, but he might win one

On four occasions at Group One level, Happy Clapper was relegated to second place by Champion mare Winx, restricting his Group 1 tally to three, however, in Saturday's first Group 1 of the season - the Winx Stakes, Happy Clapper ($4.2) gets his chance.

The popular galloper and his likable trainer Pat Webster, are all set for the nine 9yo's return with Website saying his gelding has never been in better condition.

"In my mind there's probably a cloud there with him being nine, but to be honest, he looks as good as he's ever looked at this stage of his prep and at this time of the year," Webster said.

"As a matter of fact, he looks better. Even Hugh Bowman said at the trials, 'mate, how good does he look'.

The race also sees the return of Autumn Stars - Verry Ellegant and Avilius - with the latter the early favourite ($3.4) and Verry Ellegant ($4).

The pair have both trialed very strongly and although each has challenging campaigns ahead of them, look ready to produce their best, first up.
